This is the bundle for the new shawl pattern by Françoise Danoy, Once were Weavers. This pattern is a part of the Mana Wahine collection, a collaboration between Françoise Danoy and Leila Raven

The MANA WĀHINE collection, six knitwear designs inspired by Aotearoa and Hawai’i, is the inaugural series from the AROHA | ALOHA project highlighting the works of modern indigenous makers.

This shawl features a beautiful lace pattern, making it the perfect accessory for those chilly summer evenings. Here is how the designer describes her design:

Once Were Weavers is a tribute to the complexities of Indigenous peoples that colonization tried to erase, in an effort to deem us inferior and thus in need of saving and civilizing. A take on the name of the New Zealand movie “Once Were Warriors”, a brutal movie that displays the violent image of Māori culture, this shawl celebrates the depth of Māori, past, present and future. We are scientists, voyagers, navigators, gardeners, weavers, makers, artists. While we are a strong warrior people, we are so much more than that.

We have created these bundles using our Merino Singles and Mohair Silk bases held together, instead of the recommended DK weight for a lighter, more ethereal fabric which will achieve a similar guage and offer great texture.

This bundle contains 3 skeins of Merino Singles and 3 skeins of Mohair Silk in the following colorways:

  • Avoine
  • Dawn
  • Hegelia
  • Highgarden
  • Loam
  • Parchment

The pattern for this shawl is not included in the bundle and is available on Ravelry and the Aroha / Aloha website.
