FREE PATTERN: Julia's mitts

FREE PATTERN: Julia's mitts

Yarn: Mohair Silk + Fingering Singles by The Wandering Flock in Aimee's Peaches & Dreams (yarns are held together)

You can make these simple mitts using leftovers. They don't use a lot of yarn. You need about 20-25g of yarn to make them. I like to use Fingering weight yarn held double with a strand of Mohair Silk or Soyeux. But you can also make them in one strand of Sport or DK weight.

Size Adult M/L: 2.75 and 3.25mm.

Cast on 44 sts.

Join in the round using the magic loop method or use double-pointed needles if you prefer. For magic loop, slide your newly cast on stitches on the circular needle cable, bend your cable in the middle and slide it through your stitches again so that you have 20 sts on front needle and 24 sts on back needle for example (it’s easier to use multiples of 4, so you start your second needle with knit stitches), with your yarn hanging from the back needle.

K2, p2, repeat to end of row.

Work your cuff in 2x2 ribbing as long or short as you like. I went with 2 inches / 5 cm.

Switch to bigger needle and knit 5 rows.

Start increasing for thumb gusset as follows:

Set-up row: Knit to 2 sts before middle of row, kfb, pm, kfb, pm, k to end.

Row 1: knit all sts.

Row 2: K to m, kfb the 1st and last sts between markers, k to end.

Repeat last 2 rows until 18 sts between markers.

Repeat row 1.

On the next row, knit to marker, place the 18 sts for thumb on scrap yarn, knit to end of row.

Knit hand for 3cm (or longer if you wish).

Switch to smaller needles.

K2, p2, repeat to end.

Work 2x2 rib for 7-8 rows (again, length is customizable).

Bind off in pattern.

Knit the thumb: Using smaller needles, pick up the 18 sts on hold + 2 sts to close hole.

Ssk, k to last 2 sts, k2tog. Repeat this row.

2x2 rib on the 16 sts. (7 or 8 rows)

Bind off in pattern.

Repeat for 2nd mitt.

This pattern is easy to adapt if you wish to make the mitts bigger or smaller. Simply cast on more or less stitches by multiples of 4.

If you have small / thin hands, you can cast on 36 sts instead of 44, and use slightly bigger needles (3mm for the ribbing, and 3.5mm for the stockinette).
