A Quick Halloween Hat in Big Merino Noir
With spooky season fast approaching, we thought: what’s cozier—and more iconic—than a knitted black cat hat?
Inspired by Aimée’s sleek black cat Phoebe, and nodding to the now-legendary Pussyhat worn during the Women’s March of 2017, this simple and empowering knit makes a perfect quick project for October.
Best of all? It knits up in no time using La Bien Aimée Big Merino—our plump, squishy, and oh-so-soft yarn—shown here in Noir, of course.
🧶 Black Cat Hat Pattern

🐱 Let’s Knit
-
Cast on
– Small: 52 stitches
– Large: 60 stitches
We recommend a stretchy cast-on like the German Twisted Cast-On, but a classic long tail will work just fine. - Join in the round and knit all stitches.
-
Knit until your hat measures
– Small: 22 cm
– Large: 25 cm - Turn the hat inside out. Split your stitches evenly onto two needles (26 / 30 on each side).
- Bind off using a 3-needle bind-off.
- Turn right side out. Voilà—your cat hat is done!
The best part? The simple rectangle shape forms perfect little cat ears when worn—no shaping required.
Grab a skein or two of Big Merino and cast on today. Whether you’re channeling Phoebe, or celebrating Halloween, this hat is a quick knit that speaks volumes.
