Nougat, my new pattern
Nougat is a joyful exploration of texture and color, born from my long-standing love of intarsia and marling. By holding one strand of fingering-weight yarn together with one strand of fluffy mohair, I wanted to create a fabric that feels light yet cozy, with beautiful depth and softness.
The graphic checkerboard motif is worked using a very approachable form of intarsia. Instead of switching both strands, only the mohair color changes, allowing the shades to gently blur and interact across the surface. The result is playful yet refined—a design that shows how small, thoughtful shifts in color can create a bold and striking visual effect.
For my original sample, I chose Stella by Skydance Fibers, a beautiful yarn created for Brooklyn General Store. For our La Bien Aimée yarn bundles, I replaced it with Twist Nouveau, my favorite fingering-weight yarn made from 100% non-superwash merino. Its softness, structure, and clarity of color make it a perfect match for this design.
The intarsia itself is created by holding a strand of Soyeux and simply switching colors from square to square. The fingering-weight yarn remains constant throughout, making the process intuitive and relaxing—perfect for knitters who enjoy color play without complexity.
Nougat is all about discovery: watching colors shift, textures bloom, and simple techniques come together to form something truly special.
